Akrit Jaswal
The Seven Year Old Surgeon
Akrit Pran Jaswal, India’s Child Surgeon - Child Genius

Akrit JaswalA young girl in India badly burned as a toddler, her fingers had fused together and curled into a knotted ball. Her shepherd family could not afford surgery, but they had heard of a remarkable young boy being called the child surgeon. Akrit Jaswal was only seven years old when he operated, successfully, on the eight year old girl to release her fingers.

Akrit Jaswal had a reputation, in the region, for being a medical genius. He has been shown to have the highest I.Q. of any boy his age in India, a country of over one billion people.

He has focussed this phenomenal intelligence on medicine and now, at the age of twelve, claims to be on the verge of discovering a cure for cancer.

An early developer, Akrit was walking and talking by the time he was 10 months old. He was reading and writing by two, and reading Shakespeare, in English, by the time he was five, and is now talking about his theories for oral gene therapy in the fight against cancer.

He is studying for a science degree at Chandigarh College and, at twelve years of age, is the youngest student ever accepted by an Indian University.

Akrit’s father left the family a year ago, depressed and exhausted by six years battling with Indian bureaucracy to get his son’s intellect acknowledged and resources made available for his cancer research.

Is it possible that this young boy knows something the medical profession does not? Throughout history, scientific breakthroughs have come not only from the established, the learned, and the scholarly, but also from single flashes of insight and inspiration.

Akrit is not phased by his fame and is used to meeting government ministers and press representatives. For ordinary people meeting Akrit, it is very different. When he is in town, they gather for an audience. They come with prescriptions and medicines, seeking advice. They come with ailments and injuries for a diagnosis. They come to see a doctor, a healer. They come to see a guru, and because this is India, there is always spiritual dimension.

Akrit may be famous but, will he be the one to unlock the secrets to a cure for cancer. He was invited to Imperial College, London to find out. He will spend two weeks based at Imperial College having his intelligence tested and talking super-mechanisms, genes and therapies with scientists at the cutting-edge of cancer research.
Patel and Djamgoz
Mr Anup Patel and Professor Mustafa Djamgoz

Akrit must convince Professor Mustafa Djamgoz, a world-renowned research biologist, and his colleague Mr Anup Patel, a consultant urological surgeon, that his ideas are realistic and worth pursuing.

The inquisitors become his friends, Mr Patel and Professor Djamgoz are keen to foster Akrit’s enthusiasm, keen to protect him from disappointment, and willing to guide him on his way.

Professor Djamgoz says of Akrit: ” He is generating ideas based upon what he knows, in an idealistic sort of way, without being in full grip of reality, withou knowing how difficult it is to turn the ideas into practical realities”.

Just how intelligent is Akrit? Team Focus, the UK’s leading I.Q. analysts agree to test him. For Akrit this was to prove a disappointment. His exceptional results in verbal and numeracy tests were countered by poor practical tests, particularly in the area of pattern matching. Because of this wide range of results Team Focus chose not to give him a final rating.

Rosemary Facer, a childhood psychologist, put forward the theory that Akrit had been an early developer accounting for the good results and because of this early genius he had missed out on later schooling accounting for the poor practical results. These results do not affect what Akrit may achieve, but he needs help, a wise friend to talk to.

The Professor’s analysis is that Akrit needs to obsess less and enjoy more. He thinks Akrit shows great potential but it needs to be properly guided.

Akrit returns home to India, slightly maturer, a little more realistic, but this precocious young man is still convinced that he will find a cure for cancer.

Questions and Answers
Safety of Phenylpropanolamine

November 6, 2000

1. What action is the FDA announcing today?

The FDA has asked firms that market pharmaceutical or drug products containing phenylpropanolamine (fen-el-pro-pa-nol-a-mine) to voluntarily discontinue marketing them. We are also alerting consumers to the risks associated with the use of products containing phenylpropanolamine.

2. What is phenylpropanolamine?

Phenylpropanolamine is an ingredient used in prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drug products as a nasal decongestant to relieve stuffy nose or sinus congestion and in OTC weight control drug products to control appetite.

3. Why is phenylpropanolamine unsafe when this product has been in use for many years?

On May 11, 2000, FDA received results of a study conducted by scientists at Yale University School of Medicine that showed an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding of the brain) in people who were taking phenylpropanolamine. Phenylpropanolamine has been used for many years and a very small number of people taking the drug have had strokes. The Yale study helped show that the number of people having strokes when taking phenylpropanolamine was greater than the number of people having strokes who were not taking phenylpropanolamine. Although the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is very low, FDA has significant concerns because of the seriousness of a stroke and the inability to predict who is at risk. Because of continued reports to the FDA of hemorrhagic stroke associated with phenylpropanolamine and the results of the Yale study, we now feel that the risks of using phenylpropanolamine outweigh the benefits and recommend that consumers no longer use products containing phenylpropanolamine.

4. Are there any population groups at higher risk when using products containing phenylpropanolamine?

The Yale University study showed that the risk of hemorrhagic stroke was found mostly in women; however, men may also be at risk.

5. What types of products contain phenylpropanolamine?

Phenylpropanolamine is found in some prescription and OTC nasal decongestants and cough/cold products and OTC products for weight control.

6. If a patient brings me, a pharmacist, a prescription containing phenylpropanolamine, should I fill it?

FDA has not said that such prescriptions should not be filled. However, you should make sure that both the prescriber and the consumer are aware that the drug contains phenylpropanolamine and have discussed the risks and benefits of taking the product as prescribed.

7. My family has been using products that contain phenylpropanolamine; is there any danger?

In the Yale study, the increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke was detected, among women using the drug for weight control and for nasal decongestion, in the 3 days after starting use of the medication. While the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is very small, for this reason we suggest you stop taking the drug immediately and use an alternative drug product.

8. Is there another medicine that I can take in place of my medicine that contains phenylpropanolamine?

Yes, there are other products on the market that do not contain phenylpropanolamine. Ask your pharmacist or health care provider what other products are available for your needs.

9. How will I know if my OTC products contain phenylpropanolamine?

OTC drug products containing this ingredient may be identified by looking for “phenylpropanolamine” in the list of active ingredients on the label. If you are still unsure, check with your pharmacist to help you determine if a product contains phenylpropanolamine.

10. How will I know if my prescription nasal decongestant or cough/cold products contains phenylpropanolamine?

If you are using a prescription nasal decongestant or cough/cold product you should talk to your pharmacist or health care provider to determine if phenylpropanolamine is present.

11. If I have questions about drug products whom can I call?

Call 1-888 INFO FDA (1-888-463-6332)

12. How can I report a side effect with phenylpropanolamine?

FDA encourages anyone aware of a serious adverse reaction, including consumers, to submit a MedWatch report.

You can report an adverse event in two ways:

Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch and click on “How to Report”
Call 1-800-FDA-1088

ATM mistake lead to $700,000,000 credited to bank account

This story happened a few days ago in Ekaterinburg city, in Ural region in Russia. One man decided to add some money to his bank account via ATM. He went to the nearest one and put 2,000 roubles (around $74). The ATM took the money and returned him a slip. Here is the photo of that slip:

The amount on the slip was 2,006,699,00 RUR (around $7,430,000). He was astonished, he has got another slip – and still the amount was the same. So he decided to go the bank and tell them about the mistake ATM made.

Salaam Mumbai!!!

Mumbai….my city…..a city that’s been saluted since time immemorial for its resilient spirit….”Salaam Mumbai” say one and all….its ability to bounce back from just about any tragedy a known fact by now.Yet 11th July was a day no mumbaikar is going to forget in a hurry…mumbai’s lifeline local trains…8 blasts in 11 min along the northern spine of the city….along 6:30 to 7…..adjacent train commuters grasped reality as fast as they could stopping their own trains…getting off, helping the victims…pulling them off and bundling them to hospitals even as reports filtered in about more blasts happening elsewhere….news channels went haywire as confused mumbaikars tried to make sense of the enormity of the calamity which struck them! Citizens got down for hands on help not waiting for help to filter in, I have myself witnessed the grittiness of mumbaikars last yr on 26th July when mumbai was in the grip of another calmity albeit, natural then…..then too we had to help each other out…holding hands as ppl frm adjacent residential complexes came in to help depite the heavy downpour…here too..vehicles, food, water, ppl…u name it they were there….willing to pull thier city out even as they had to grasp reality themselves…..everyhousehold was abounding with activity even as images flashed across the tv screen…mouths dry,one heart beat faster we watched as bodies were picked….then hands, then legs…..mangled metal everywhere…..severed heads….rains werent helping at all….in midst of all this one tihng was glaringly obvious….it was a well planned ,cold blooded bastardly act…meticulously organized to paralyse the city….almost succeeded too!200 dead,625 injured and the toll keeps rising by the min even as the city fights back….nothing is closed today….an attempt to normalcy even as frantic efforts are on to locate near and dear ones….
To think this happened in first class compartments….in Mumbai first class is not a luxury, just an effort to avoid the overflowing second class…..first class warrants death?
communication was jammed yest nite thro, even as citizens raged about it…..it makes one’s blood boil that mumbai is victimized everytime and then they say”salaam mumbai” how long? how far?but its a good thing noone cowered, after all it is our city,….top notch leaders have dropped in paralysing efforts even further as the security goes in towards their security…..My city, my beloved city……11th July…….another day, same city, but nothing’s the same again!!!

otherwise provided to them by an attacker.

All versions are affected: Microsoft Excel 2000 and later.

Please be very careful opening unsolicited attachments from both known and
