I found a nice article to send to friends explaining the essence of Paryushan.
http://pluralism.org/resources/tradition/essays/jain4.php
One question I had from this is where they mention, “They add to their normal vegetarian restrictions by avoiding such foods as potatoes, onions, and garlic–the eating of which entail killing the plant instead of just taking its fruit.”
Is that accurate? That seems like an important distinction which makes sense to me, to avoid foods which involve killing the plant rather than taking its fruit. I was always told to avoid kann-mood because there is more “life” in the roots. Thoughts?
Here is a comprehensive look into whether our body is designed to be vegetarian. I found it a very educational/interesting read.

If you don’t want to read the whole article, the summary is: Yes, humans are designed to be herbivores (vegetarians). Scroll all the way down in the article to see charts where our body parts are compared to the same body parts of carnivores, herbivores, omnivores and humans. ~95% of our physical features match with those of herbivores!

This is one of the best videos explaining various world religions from start till date though Jainism is missing. If i am not wrong, Jainism prevailed before the birth of Krishna. I haven’t seen a better and effective way to present stuff in 90 seconds, interesting..eh?

9-10-07 – Jain way of self solution
9-11-07 – Jain way of stress free life
9-12-07 – Jain way of optimum health
9-13-07 – Who is responsible for pain and pleasure?
9-14-07 – Your destiny is in your hands
9-15-07 – Paryusan: “Light of Life”
While talking to Bai yesterday, I found out she has taken pechkhan of evening choviar each day for the past 56 years (with only one break in the middle while she visited USA in the 70′s).
Wow!!
Michhami Dukkadam to all of you.
Paryushan is the time to make a conscious effort and look back into our thoughts, words and actions. It is the chance to have a glimpse of our ownselves (the soul) and our eternity. The best part is that we actually have a chance to confess for our actions and take accountibility for them. As I look back in this past year I am present to a lot of moments and thoughts where I have hurt my ownself or others. I request all of you to forgive me for any harsh words spoken or any action on my part which made you unhappy.
Michhami Dukkadam
Do forgive us if we have hurt your feelings in any way.
I am sure we all have celebrated this pious and special festival in our best ways and grabbed every opportunity to enjoy it and make the most of it.
Jai Jinendra
Best Wishes Always

A little boy wanted to meet God.
He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with a bag of potato chips and a six-pack of juice and started his journey.
When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old woman. She was sitting in the park, just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his juice when he noticed that the old lady looked hungry, so he offered her some chips. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him.
Her smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered her a root beer. Again, she smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.
As twilight approached, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave; but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old woman, and gave her a hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever.
When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so happy?” He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But before his mother could respond, he added, “You know what? She’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”
Meanwhile, the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. Her son was stunned by the look of peace on her face and he asked, “Mother, what did you do today that made you so happy?” She replied, “I ate corn chips in the park with God.” However, before her son responded, she added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.”
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or! a lifetime. Embrace all equally!
Have lunch with God……..
